When Literature Builds Bridges: Our eTwinning Journey in "Writer: Mirror of an Era"

Can literature bring young people from different countries closer together? Our eTwinning project "Writer: Mirror of an Era" proved that it certainly can.

Over the past months, our students embarked on an inspiring journey where books became conversation starters, writers became cultural ambassadors, and English became the language that connected us with friends across Europe. Through collaboration, creativity, and digital tools, students discovered that literature is much more than stories on a page—it is a reflection of history, identity, emotions, and shared human experiences.

Working alongside partner schools, our students explored authors, exchanged ideas, created digital materials, and participated in international online meetings. Every activity encouraged them to communicate, think critically, and appreciate different perspectives while improving their English language skills in authentic situations.

One of the highlights of the project was meeting Romanian poet Izabela Popa, a former student of our school. Listening to her speak about inspiration, writing, and the creative process made literature feel alive and accessible. Her words motivated our students to believe that their own ideas and emotions deserved to be written down and shared.

A particularly rewarding aspect of the project was bringing together students from two different age groups. Our experienced eighth graders worked side by side with sixth graders who were taking part in their very first eTwinning project. The older students naturally became mentors, guiding their younger teammates through collaborative activities and digital tools, while the younger students quickly gained confidence by learning from their peers. It was wonderful to see responsibility, empathy, and teamwork develop so naturally.

Technology enriched every stage of our work. Platforms such as TwinSpace, Google Docs, Padlet, Genially, Quizizz, and Canva allowed students to collaborate beyond classroom walls, exchange feedback, and create meaningful digital content together. These tools helped transform learning into an interactive and engaging experience while strengthening students' digital competence.

As an English teacher, I was delighted to see how naturally the project became part of our lessons. Students used English with a genuine purpose—to communicate, collaborate, and create with international partners. They were no longer learning the language only from textbooks; they were using it to build friendships, solve problems, and express themselves.

The culmination of our journey was a collaborative digital creative writing book, designed in Canva and featuring original texts written by students from all partner schools. More than a final product, it became a celebration of imagination, cooperation, and the unique voices of every participant.

Looking back, this project was about much more than literature. It was about confidence, curiosity, friendship, creativity, and the joy of learning together. It reminded us that every student has a story worth telling and that, through international collaboration, those stories can inspire others far beyond the classroom.

This is the true spirit of eTwinning—learning together, growing together, and building bridges that connect young people across cultures through education.
